About Civic TN & Action TN

Civic TN is a state-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit civic engagement “table” that is working towards a future where underrepresented communities have a greater voice and influence in shaping state policy and choosing leaders who affect their lives. CivicTN is part of the national State Voices network.

Action TN is a 501(c)(4) state-based political alignment “table” that aims to coordinate a coalition of progressive organizations to build permanent advocacy and campaign infrastructure, advance progressive policies, and shift collective power in Tennessee in favor of progressive values and democracy. Action TN is part of the national America Votes network.

Civic TN and Action TN serve as hubs where partners work together, particularly to leverage research, policy, organizing, voter engagement, and elections to achieve larger gains than any one group could on its own. The two tables coordinate to the extent permissible by law, including sharing data and operational staff, who serve to drive coordination among partners, increase state capacity, coordinate national and state strategies, make cutting-edge data and technology accessible, mobilize funding, and create a community of innovation.

Position Summary

Data is one of the most important and powerful ways we support grassroots organizing and social change. The Data Associate is a key position that bridges data and tools with different grassroots groups. The person in this position will provide support to a wide range of table partners with a voter engagement tool called the VAN (Voter Activation Network); including data administration, basic training on organizing tools, and technical assistance to successfully implement their voter engagement work. This position will work at the direction of the Data Director.

Depending on experience, this position may also take on advanced responsibilities related to partner data strategy, project management, reporting systems, and statewide data infrastructure.

As with all Civic TN and Action TN staff, this individual is expected to be an active, collaborative team member who demonstrates a commitment to equity, inclusion, and building collective power.

Location

This is a remote, work-from-home position. Candidates living in Tennessee or willing to relocate to Tennessee are preferred

Relocation assistance is available for candidates who choose to move to Tennessee. 

Candidates residing in the Southeast region, including Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, and Virginia, will also be considered. Some travel is required.

Principal Responsibilities for the Position

Data Operations & Administration

  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and security settings across coalition data systems.
  • Maintain data quality and ensure compliance with state and national data policies.
  • Create and manage universes, scripts, survey questions, activist codes, phone banks, turf cuts, and bulk data uploads.
  • Support election setup, voter file maintenance, and quality assurance for statewide voter engagement programs.
  • Assist with implementation of new tools, integrations, and technology improvements.

Reporting & Program Support

  • Maintain coalition dashboards and reporting systems.
  • Produce reports on voter engagement programs, partner activity, electoral programs, and organizational metrics.
  • Assist with data analysis and visualization to support organizing and strategic decision-making.
  • Present information in clear, accessible ways for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support program planning and implementation by ensuring organizers and partners have the data they need to be successful.

Coalition Data Strategy

  • Work alongside partners to strengthen their use of data and organizing technology.
  • Recommend best practices for data collection, quality assurance, and voter engagement workflows.
  • Collaborate with organizing staff to support coordinated voter engagement efforts across the coalition.
  • Identify opportunities to improve statewide data infrastructure and partner coordination through better systems and processes.

National Coordination

  • Participate in State Voices and America Votes data networks.
  • Attend national trainings, peer learning communities, and working groups.
  • Help implement national standards and best practices across Tennessee’s shared data infrastructure.

Other Duties

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned in support of Civic TN and Action TN’s mission.

Experience & Skills 

The ideal candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • At least one previous cycle volunteering or working in a political, nonprofit, labor, or community organization
  • Base knowledge of how to read and understand voter, demographic, and other data sets
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to communicate technical subjects to non-technical audiences
  • Experience working in coalition with partners, coalitions, or experience working in diverse communities, particularly in communities of color
  • Candidates must have a willingness and aptitude to seek out and learn new technical skills that will further the mission of the table and assist in presenting data to partners in an accessible manner
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity and record of success working with communities of color, women, low-income people, LGBTQIA individuals, and other historically marginalized communities

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • At least one cycle of experience working or volunteering in political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, labor, community organizing, or civic engagement.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to users with varying levels of technical experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse organizations and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, social justice, and building power alongside historically marginalized communities.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to continuously learn new technologies and organizing tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience administering VAN/VoteBuilder, EveryAction, or comparable voter engagement platforms.
  • Experience supporting organizing or electoral programs.
  • Experience creating reports using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Looker Studio, Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools.
  • Experience providing technical support, training, or user onboarding.
  • Experience working in coalition environments.
  • Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and/or 501(c)(4) organizations.

This position may be filled at either the Data Associate or Data Manager level, depending on the selected candidate’s experience. Compensation and responsibilities will be calibrated accordingly.

Data Associate: The Data Associate supports the day-to-day administration of coalition data systems, partner support, reporting, and training while working closely with the Data Director. This role is ideal for someone looking to deepen their expertise in data, organizing technology, and coalition support.

Data Manager: The Data Manager independently leads partner data strategy, manages complex implementation projects, develops reporting systems and workflows, advises coalition partners on organizing technology, and helps shape the long-term development of Tennessee’s shared data infrastructure. Manager-level candidates typically bring multiple election cycles of experience administering voter file systems and leading data operations.

Salary Range and Benefits 

  • Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience.
    • Data Associate: $55,000 to $60,000 
    • Data Manager: $60,000 to $70,000
  • Benefits
    • The company offers benefit plans that cover 100% of health, vision, and dental coverage for employees and 0% for dependents. 
    • We also offer a 401k plan with up to a 3% company match. 
    • All employees receive a $30/mo technology stipend and a $30/mo internet stipend.
    • Paid vacation accrues at the rate of 13.34 hours per month (20 days/4 weeks per year), with up to 8 unused days available to roll over each year. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one day per month (12 days per year) and does not roll over. Competitive paid holiday policy, including closing the office from Christmas to New Year's Day. Two floating holidays and two personal days that do not roll over.
